30 Years of Collaboration and Creativity!

This year is extra special for us as our IDBM programme celebrates its 30th anniversary! In 1995, IDBM started as a pilot minor programme before evolving into a full Master's programme in 2010, coinciding with the founding of Aalto University.

Professor Emeritus Yrjö Sotamaa, one of the visionary founders of IDBM, reflects on how the idea was born from a simple realisation: when people from different disciplines struggle to understand each other, progress slows. This insight sparked the need for a programme focused on multidisciplinary collaboration.

"When you start collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, you begin to appreciate the value of your own expertise, recognize how other disciplines contribute, and understand the true power of collaboration. It's the foundation of creativity."

As with all great ideas, it seemed a bit "crazy" at first. But once the approach was put into practice, it quickly became clear how valuable cross-disciplinary teamwork could be. As Yrjö puts it: "When you start collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, you begin to appreciate the value of your own expertise, recognise how other disciplines contribute, and understand the true power of collaboration. It's the foundation of creativity."

The core belief of bridging disciplines to spark radical creativity has remained central to IDBM from day one. Looking to the future, Yrjö emphasises that interdisciplinary collaboration is more crucial than ever—and we must continue to nurture it. What brings him the most pride is hearing from our alumni, who often share how their IDBM experience played a pivotal role in their careers. He reflects: "It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the growth of the IDBM community. It's a unique, tight-knit group that stands out from any other programme."

Stay tuned for celebrations later this year! 🎉
